Woman Told Me Why She’s Voting For Żaren Tal-Ajkla During House Visit, Former MP Jason Azzopardi Recounts

Former PN MP Jason Azzopardi has recounted a particularly unusual house visit he went on last February which he said left him questioning the essence of democracy.
Azzopardi said he knocked on the door of a social housing unit and was greeted by a large family, all of whom spoke politics with him and told him they will vote PN except for the girlfriend of one of the sons.
“She stayed quiet, smoking a cigarette, and told me she was from another district,” he said. “However, as I was leaving, she spoke out and her words hit me like a cold shower.”
According to Azzopardi, the woman told him “Listen up, you. I’m not giving my vote to either the PN or the PL.”

“I asked her in an educated manner whether she was joking or whether she was voting ADPD. She said that she’s not joking and that she will give her first-preference vote to Tal-Ajkla because he was going to give her money to expand her breasts.”
“She said this seriously and in such a decisive tone, and her eyes almost told me that I shouldn’t even dare to try and convince her otherwise.”
Tal-Ajkla’s bizarre electoral pledge to grant €4,000 to any woman who gets breast implants shocked many people on the island and was even featured by UK news platform LadBible
Azzopardi said he left the home reflecting on what Winston Churchill had famously said about democracy – that it is the “worst form of government except for the others”.
Azzopardi’s canvasser Jonathan Degabriele told Lovin Malta that he was waiting outside the block when it happened and that the MP seemed “stunned and impressed”.
Azzopardi served as a PN MP for five legislatures, between 1998 and 2022, but wasn’t re-elected at the last election.
