‘Xagħra Mayor’s Resignation Is A Blow To Labour’: PN MP Stands In Solidarity With Christian Zammit
Former St Julian’s mayor and current PN MP Albert Buttigieg has stated that Christian Zammit’s resignation from his position as Xagħra mayor is a blow to the Labour Party.
This comes after Zammit promptly resigned from Xagħra mayor, councillor at the local council, and president of the Labour Regional Committee, saying that he’s going to “leave and get out of the way” – after 23 years of political service to the Labour party.
“The resignation of Zammit is not only a blow to the Labour party but it is also a loss for those who believe in honest politics that protect the environment in all its entirety,” Buttigieg said while reacting to the news.
“Several mayors, both from PN and PL, are under pressure!”
“While Christian and I didn’t agree on a number of political themes (that’s why we were in different parties), as mayors we agreed on the need to protect the environment from the claws of those who can’t have enough!”
“We agreed that as mayors we must protect the interest of the common good and not the greed of some.”
He continued to say that this resignation is a victory for a number of businessmen and contractors, whom he personally refers to as “fat cats” – and who “have sworn to destroy Gozo”.
“It is a victory for those who only see up to the tip of their noses! This resignation shows what I have talked about several times, namely the connection between certain businessmen and developers and the political party and their politicians who put great pressure on those who try to have their voices heard for the common good!
“Honest citizens are fed up with this idea that could lead to Malta and Gozo becoming one concrete city!”
“We understand Christian well and everyone knows why this happened. But even though I respect his decision, I do not agree with his resignation – Never give in. Never give up,” he said.
Nonetheless, Buttigieg thanked Christian for his work and wished him courage.
