The police have officially confirmed in a statement that an autopsy on Zack Meli, the 24-year-old man who died in Paceville following an argument yesterday morning, proved “inconclusive”.

TVM reported today that the autopsy on Meli showed no signs of violence, and other media houses soon cited sources to reach the same conclusion, which seemed to go against initial reports that Meli was punched by Denis Davkov – a 19-year-old Bulgarian national who was arrested by the police. However, in a statement, the police said they were still trying to establish Meli’s cause of death.

Police statement on Zack Meli autopsy

“The results of today’s autopsy were inconclusive, and further tests will now be carried out to establish the cause of death,” the police said. “The person [Davkov] who was in police custody in connection with this death has been released on police bail, pending further investigations.”

The series of events leading up to Meli’s death remains a mystery, although police are believed to be in possession of CCTV footage. According to ONE News, Meli was “acting indecently, was possibly under the effect of drugs and Davkov had actually requested police assistance himself. However, according to MaltaToday, the police were called in by employees of a nearby taxi company, after Meli was “fooling around on the pavement”. This second report claims that Meli was involved in an argument with Davkov, his girlfriend and another person, that Davkov punched Meli, and that he  then brought Meli a glass of water after seeing him “acting funny”.
