6 Projects Hugo Chetcuti Was Working On Before He Was Killed

Article Featured Image

Hugo Chetcuti was one of the most successful businessmen in Malta’s entertainment industry, setting up some of the most well-known nightclubs and restaurants in Paceville.

And he had plans to expand his empire further, both in Malta and beyond, before his assassination cut those time plans short. These are some of the main projects he had planned that he will unfortunately never see completed.

1. A four-star hotel

After opening a boutique hotel in the centre of Paceville, Chetcuti was about to open a four-star hotel nearby, complete with cutting-edge technology, rooms with private pools and views of St George’s Bay. The hotel opened its doors a few days after Chetcuti was stabbed last week.

2. Two new restaurants

After successfully branching out into Middle Eastern food, Italian food, Asian food, burgers and pub grub, Chetcuti was in the final stages of setting up two new restaurants – one specialising in haute cuisine and another specialising in seafood and cocktails.

The haute cuisine restaurant, HSixty6, is right next to Hugo’s Burger Bar and the new four-start hotel, while the seafood and cocktails joint is in the building that used to house the Nordic nightclub. Chetcuti was testing out food in that restaurant when he was stabbed twice in the stomach last week.

3. Restoring an old Sliema villa

At the start of the year, Chetcuti signed a promise-of-sale agreement for the purchase of the old Villa Priuli in Balluta Bay, right next to the Meridien Hotel. He never got to reveal his ultimate plan for the long-abandoned villa, but he had teased on Facebook that it would include luxurious suites.

4. Branching out into Saudi Arabia

Hugo Chetcuti had amassed a significant empire in Malta at the time of his death, but he was also planning to take his brand international – singling out Saudi Arabia as a place he could set up a branch of Hugo’s Burger Bar.

“The franchise could possibly branch out to Saudi Arabia, one of the places that are interested, but we have had a lot of attention so we will see,” he said.

5. A bond issue

To finance some of his new projects, Chetucti planned to launch a €5 million bond issue. The bond issue was recently approved by the MFSA and placed on the Malta Stock Exchange.

6. Ursuline Sisters’ Creche Upgrade

Not a personal project, but Chetcuti was also renowned for being a particularly charitable person. A month before his murder, he uploaded a video which detailed his plans to donate a sizeable sum of money to the Ursuline Sisters’ Creche in Dingli Street, Sliema. The nuns praised Chetcuti for his willingness to do all it takes to improve the lives of the orphans housed at the creche.

ALS sufferer and activist Bjorn Formosa also confirmed that Chetcuti had recently donated an unspecified amount of money for the construction of a new ‘Dar Bjorn’ home for patients suffering from neurological conditions.
