The Struggle Is Real: Local Supply Does Not Meet The Demand Of A Booming Economy

A booming economy is always considered a positive thing but it can bring about major challenges for business operations. This is what Maltese businesses are currently facing in the light of this economic boom.

The domestic labour pool is not large enough to cover demand. That means that more businesses have to rely on foreign talent to fill key roles in multiple sectors.

This is easy to see as we go about our everyday life as shop assistants, food couriers, transport providers and many other sectors have third country nationals making up their workforce.

The Maltese employment landscape has undergone a huge evolution in the past years, with Jobsplus recently confirming that non-Maltese workers now make up more than a quarter of the island’s total workforce.

So that’s the problem sorted, right? Not quite – importing foreign talent to Malta is hardly a straightforward endeavour. It involves a myriad of laws and regulations, logistical issues and – most importantly – ensuring that the actual human beings who are moving to a strange country are being given all the support they need.

This is why transparency in the recruitment process is essential.

Enter WFDM, a recruitment agency focused on bringing talent from all over the globe to Malta, servicing the biggest players in the local scene.

Founded in 2020 by Matthew Mantvydas Narusevicius, WFDM was brought into being not only to provide innovative solutions to the workforce shortage, but also to introduce a standard of excellence and raise the bar for the global recruitment process.

“Finding the right candidates for key roles can be a time-consuming and complicated task for many businesses. Even if candidates successfully complete the interview process and fit in within the company culture, there are still lengthy formalities and processes to take care of,” Mr Narusevicius says.

“Unless a company is focused on recruitment, these hurdles can be insurmountable.”

Securing VISAs for non-Maltese talent has become problematic, despite paperwork being in order. This means that relying on non-Maltese workers may no longer be a feasible solution, with big organisations struggling with the resulting dearth in a professional and qualified workforce.

“WFDM is made up of people who truly want to source the right person for the right job, and we have access to a broad global network. This is why, these past years we have successfully matched companies of all sizes and industries with the most suitable candidates. But right now we continue to face challenges in finalising the migration process, despite completing all the required background checks and paperwork,” Mr Narusevicius states.

The result is an impasse. The demand is there, the willing talent is there, but bringing them together is proving to be impossible.

Diversification – finding a solution to the challenges

In just three years, WFDM has brought in a new level of trust and excellence to the recruitment process, by focusing on both the human and the legal aspects of the sector.

The company is now ready to launch a range of new services that are targeted to address various industry challenges.

“Our clients know that they can rely on our process, and are looking towards WFDM for solutions. So we are going to do exactly that, embarking on a diversification process that will enable us to provide a 360-degree suite of solutions based on our expertise and on our clients’ needs. I have invested a lot of time listening to what other business owners have to say so as to be able to identify the specific challenges and address them directly.”

WFDM’s property management arm assists clients in locating the right rental spaces across Malta and assists with property mediation. The organisation is also shortly expected to introduce a cutting-edge set of green products to Malta via DOUP.

The platform will include four products – bamboo and plastic cards, stickers, and bracelets – that make use of NFC technology to upload a variety of data such as contact details, social networking accounts, website links and more, providing modern and sustainable networking tools.

The company plans to grow their fleet of food trucks to join the existing Dhaba Indian Street food truck in Swieqi.

WFDM Auto Moto Work already services cars for jobs of any size whether it’s mechanical or cosmetic and will specialise in car body repairs, restorations and modifications.

There’s more on the cards, specifically a PR and digital marketing agency to help businesses share their stories and create meaningful engagement with audiences.
