Mrieħel Secondary School Hall Used As COVID-19 Supply Storage Room, PN MP Warns

A recreational hall at Mrieħel’s secondary school remains unavailable for staff and students as it is being used as a storage room for national COVID-19 supplies, PN MP Justin Schembri has warned.

“Give school halls back to schools immediately,” Schembri said. “Even though schools are now operating as they were pre-pandemic and all COVID-19 measures have been scrapped, many primary, middle and secondary schools are still being used as storage rooms for materials the government had purchased during the pandemic.”

“Schools clearly need this space for activities they put on from time to time and we cannot deny them the limited space they have.”

Schembri told Lovin Malta that he intends to submit a parliamentary question when Parliament reconvenes to find out exactly how many schools are being used as COVID-19 storage spaces.

Last month, Lovin Malta reported that the same problem is plaguing the Lily of the Valley public school in Mosta, whose recreational hall has been transformed into a storage space for COVID-19 supplies.

The hall is equipped with a stage and a sound room and was often used for a variety of activities, such as talent shows, musical theatre, pantos, and even for sports during bad weather.

“We have been missing plenty of student opportunities which negatively impacts the school ethos and the school environment,” staff members explained.

“In my opinion, it is not beneficial for schools to leave all these halls packed with supplies. They should have been moved last year to a location where they can be stored without putting stress on schools, headmasters, principals, teachers and most of all students,” they stressed.

Do you think an adequate place needs to be found for such supplies?
