Malta can start dreaming of hosting massive events and bringing down large international artists when its infrastructure improves or undergoes an important overhaul, entertainment entrepreneur and greatt co-founder Mark Grech has said.

Speaking to MeetInc. as part of a new series introducing The People Behind The Business, Grech drew attention to the recent SiGMA conference, which brought large companies and names to the islands and was yet another highly successful edition… but also triggered massive traffic jams all over Malta.

“If there’s something Maltese, local, almost from A to Z, which has put us on the international map, it’s SiGMA,” Grech said. “But when its venue changed, Malta stopped for three days.”

“I understand that our infrastructure is what it is, but we can’t dream of having large events, big artists, massive conventions with this infrastructure.”

“There needs to be a unanimous decision, between the government, the opposition and people within this sector, where a solution is found, and planned over a period of years where we could accommodate these volumes of people coming to Malta,” Grech continued. “I don’t think this is something which can happen over five or 10 years, but there needs to be a serious plan over 30 or 40 years, where the two, three or four political parties shake hands, irrelevant of who is actually elected to government, and they work towards that project or plan.”

“We’ve been dreaming of projects like an underground system, actually proper systems… I think that’s the first thing,” Grech said when asked what he’d change if he was Prime Minister for a day. “Obviously there are other things we should tackle, like the careless handing out of licenses – it’s becoming insane.”

“We need to have a proper infrastructure, where someone can drive a motorino without dying or ending up in hospital, and of course also reducing the use of private vehicles,” Grech finished.
