University Of Malta Allows Gozitan Students To Sit Exams Without Braving Maritime Journey
As of the first semester of the next academic year, Gozitan students will be able to sit for exams remotely at the Gozo Campus, without having to travel down to Malta.
WISEflow – the program adopted by the University of Malta near the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when lockdowns made it necessary for students to be able to work and sit exams from home – allows students to sit exams remotely.
Despite using this program, the Gozo University Group (GUG) was forced to issue a statement prior to February’s exams which were held exclusively in Malta. This forced Gozitan students to commute across land and sea during Storm Helios.
GUG has now reported that from next academic year, arrangements will be made for Gozitan students to sit exams from their island, but that doing so in time for upcoming examinations in June of this year is logistically unfeasible.
Though this is something of a compromise on their original demands, the group has been able to secure a better future for Gozitan students.
This has come with the help of PN MP Alex Borg – who sent a letter to Alfred Vella, the University of Malta’s Rector – in an apparently successful effort to encourage him to facilitate the arrangement of a better solution for Gozitan students.
GUG appears to be happy with this solution, despite acknowledging that it will not be able to help those who will be sitting exams in the next period.
Given that these will be held in summer, and weather conditions should be fairer and contribute less to an already stressful period for students, this session will hopefully be smoother for Gozitan students commuting to UoM’s Msida campus.
