PN MP Alex Borg Reminds PM About His Promises In Letter Defending Taċ-Ċawla Residents
PN MP Alex Borg has sent a letter to the office of Prime Minister Robert Abela in aid of residents of Taċ-Ċawla in Rabat Gozo – many of whom have signed a petition demanding the planned development of a residential block be halted immediately, and allocated to a different space.
“None of us are against social housing,” reads the letter sent by the Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo, “but the specific conditions of this area demand that the last open space be protected”.
The petition was signed by 181 out of 273 of the Taċ-Ċawla area residents, in just a few short days. It cites two of the residents’ demands, outlined in the letter sent to the Prime Minister.
- “The construction of another residential block in the only remaining open space in this area should be stopped immediately.”
- “Accessibility in the existing blocks should be improved through the installation of lifts, promised repeatedly by the Labour government to these residents.”
Borg brought receipts along with these demands, as he explained each further.
“Residents want this space to be improved. I understand that this should be accommodated by the government’s policy to offer as many open spaces as possible. Building a block in this location would be a direct contradiction to that policy.”
On the point of accessibility, he cited legal notice 198, from 2019, which states that every residential block must be made accessible to people with disabilities.
Borg has stood up for residents in Gozo many times in the past, often seeking to toe the line between putting pressure on authorities – while making himself available to meet and collaborate to facilitate change.
“These reasonable requests have been brought to you, and I am sure that you are ready to meet them,” continued Borg’s letter.
“I believe that there are alternative areas where this accommodation can be developed. I am available and at your disposal to meet and discuss this matter – so that together, we can make a difference for these residents.”
