Christmas lights were turned on in Republic Street and Merchants Street tonight to officially kickstart Valletta’s festive season.

A press conference was held to mark the occasion, attended by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici, Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef, Valletta Mayor Alfred Zammit and members of the Republic Street and Merchants Street business communities.

“The lighting up of these prominent streets in Valletta which both see numerous amounts of people on a daily basis has become a yearly anticipation for those who have the festive season at heart,” Bonnici said. “It is through such various initiatives that we work towards strengthening Valletta’s cultural product.”

Micallef said the Valletta Cultural Agency has ensured that the capital city starts feeling the Christmas spirit early on with a specially prepared programme of celebrations, including the switch-on of a spectacular set of Christmas lights year after year.

The VCA has prepared a number of initiatives for its ‘Christmas in the City’ programme of events for the festive period, the next of which will be the switch-on of a Christmas tree in Castille Square next Monday evening.
