Turbulent political landscapes have always been a very big thing in Malta, and trying to explain it all to foreigners keeps getting more and more complicated. But of all the unlikely places to find a super abridged, accurate representation of the entire country’s political scene, we got it thanks to a meme page.
Memes Maltin is one of those pages that don’t really hold back in their satirical works. Amassing over 7,000 followers on Facebook, the page has gone from Eurovision parodies to memes on the latest online phenomenon to hit the islands, il-Lofti Power.
However, this being Malta, quite a lot of memes do end up being about the country’s intense (and at times ridiculous) political updates. And to put all of that into perspective, Memes Maltin came up with one infographic as a handy guide for all local political parties.
The image posits some vital questions to viewers, guiding them through which party they should stand with depending on their answers. And while some questions are the more expected, “Are you liberal?” or “Do you want higher economic growth?” others are a tad more brutal.
Highlights include “How much do you hate immigrants?” and “Are you okay with corruption?”, and by the end, you soon realise there’s only one sad takeaway.
Beyond the two major political parties, the meme also throws digs at Alternattiva Demoktratika, Partit Demokratiku, Imperium Europa, Alleanza Bidla and Moviment Patrijotti Maltin.
According to the meme, if you follow the preferred route of wanting your vote to actually matter, wanting higher economic growth, and not being okay with corruption, the eventual choice you’re left with is rather grim:
This is not the only time that Memes Maltin have poked fun at all spheres of Malta’s politics in one of their posts.
Just last month, a variation of the recent Trumpet Boy meme saw the Maltese page reeling in Labour and PN’s popular mass meeting anthems… along with a hilarious cameo by none other than Mary Spiteri.
