Ħamrun Spartans suffered an ignominious exit from the UEFA Champions League last night at the hands of Gibraltarian side Lincoln Red Imps.

The Maltese champions entered the game at a slight disadvantage, having lost the first game 1-0, but they received a significant boost when Lincoln forward Daniel Bent was sent off in the fifth minute.

Soon after, Ħamrun thought they had equalised through Raphael Lopes, but it was deemed offside. It took them until the 88th minute to get an equaliser, with Vitão taking advantage of a cross into the box to slot home and send the game into extra time.

Neither team scored in the 30 minutes of extra time, although Ħamrun came extremely close, with a shot that many fans felt crossed the goal line.

The game then went to penalties, where Lincoln scored all five of their shots and Ħamrun scored their first four, before Steve Borg blasted his shot over the bar.
