Fabio Spiteri Raises €80,000 For Malta’s Animal Shelters After Brutal 1,130km Triathlon
Malta’s ironman Fabio Spiteri has managed to raise a massive €80,000 for the island’s animal shelters.
“I would like to raise awareness that shelters are struggling more than ever operating at 120% capacity. Food and vet demands are on the increase,” Spiteri told Lovin Malta.
“I would also like to advise people to shift part of their donations to the welfare of abandoned animals,” he urged.
Spiteri took on a brutal challenge last month, consisting of 1,130km of cycling, swimming and running, known as the Quintuple Ironman challenge.
In no less than 111 hours, he managed to cover a 19km swim, a 900km cycle, and an insane 211km run – all done under the scorching summer sun.
At the time of completion, Spiteri had only raised €32,000, but a massive turnaround last month saw the amount more than double!
It was far from an easy feat for Spiteri to complete, ending up with blistered feet and greatly suffering through the last few kilometres of the challenge.
This comes just months after he journeyed all around the island of Sicily for 47 hours, the kind of preparation that he needed for such a challenge.
He also did numerous 100km and 300km bike rides, a 12-hour turbo trainer indoors and two 500km bike rides, as part of his training.
Spiteri continues to be one of Malta’s prized ultra-endurance athletes and activists, known for completing extreme challenges for the love of animals.
Well done Fabio!
