Watch: Maltese Għannejja Grace Gozitan Square In Nadur With Improvised Spirtu Pront
A group of Maltese għannejja and traditional guitarists graced the square of San Pietru u San Pawl in Nadur on Sunday morning with their improvised folk singing.
The fourth edition of the event, which is organised by the Nadur Local Council and the Ministry for Gozo, brought together a group of folk singers and guitarists, representing all ages, from younguns to veterans.
The folk singers present were Toni Cutajar il-Pikkolin, Frans il-Bloqq, Alken il-Paj, and Jean Claude l-fox, with Johnny ta’ Birżebbuġa and his friends on the guitars.
And amazingly so, the event attracted people from all demographics, including families with their young ones, friends, and elderly people.
Għana is a traditional form of Maltese folk singing, typically comprised of a singer and a guitarist. There are three forms of Għana, fil-Għoli, fil-Fatt, and Spirtu Pront.
In Spirtu Pront, two or more singers are grouped together, taking part in an improvised song, often touching upon social topics, in a quick-wit style.
Back in 2021, traditional Għana was placed on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage, following the Maltese ftira.
And recently, during the first edition of Malta’s Got Talent, għanejja Jomike and Lydon were crowned winners and awarded a whopping €25,000.
