Absolutely No Chance Of An Early Election Until Labour Party’s Mandate Is Over, Chris Fearne Says
The Deputy Prime Minister has said there is no chance of an early election and the Labour Party will finish its full five-year term. Chris Fearne said the PL would be doing this “not out of arrogance, but out of duty to the voters”.
In an interview with Reno Bugeja on the TVM show Dissett, Fearne said the current developments in the ongoing investigation into the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia showed the country’s institutions were working and that Malta was a “serious” country that observed the rule of law.
He went on to say that former Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi had nothing to do with the planned assassination and that the decision to lose two ministers in one day was “courageous”.
When asked if he would be ready to take the mantle of Prime Minister in the case that Joseph Muscat resigned, Fearne said he had “full faith” in the Prime Minister, and instead called out the “three factions” that he said currently make up the opposition party.
Fearne said the government was respecting their parliamentary mandate and would complete their five-year term, but was also aware of the mood in the country.
He said the assassination has done “damage to the Caruana Galizia family and to the country” and the government was “ready to repair the damage”.
He also said he had no problem with the ongoing protests in Valletta, and that there was no ongoing “constitutional crisis”.
