Migrants Evicted From Marsa Stables Have Begun Breaking Into Their Former Homes After Struggling To Find Somewhere To Sleep

Migrants evicted from the Marsa stables they once called home have broken back into their residences in a bid to find a roof over their heads, the Planning Authority has revealed.

The 19 stables being used as illegal residences have been sealed off ever since authorities discovered at least 200 beds at the make-shift living facilities.

Speaking to TVM, the head of the PA’s enforcement section, Architect Raphael Axiak, said:

“Unfortunately, we had a particular case in which the seals were twice broken, and it was again illegally used as residences.”

Owners who may have converted their stables into illegal residences have 16 days to turn the site into its original use.

The area, it would appear is a hotbed for illegal residences with the PA also seeling off another nearby complex housing a further two stables after receiving several complaints.

Despite the recent reports on the issue, migrant homelessness remains relatively unaddressed. While 37 migrants were arrested in the raid, dozens have been left to face the streets.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, one man who lived within the stables described how his salary was simply unable to pay market rent prices and support his family at the same time.

“I have two children in Mali. How can I feed them?” the man asked.

The government, it seems, is yet to take action. Social Solidarity Minister Michael Falzon has insisted that his ministry would offer any help to those who ask for it. However, he failed to offer up any concrete action beyond typical platitudes.

This case is not isolated; last year, over 120 migrants were left homeless in a similar raid on a Qormi farm.
