KFC workers handed out free refreshments to attendees of the vigil organised for the first anniversary of Pelin Kaya’s harrowing murder.

Footage obtained by Lovin Malta shows workers from the establishment walking around the crowd of mourners with free soft drinks and water, seemingly as a gesture of kindness and solidarity.

The vigil was held last night at the site of Pelin’s tragic murder where she was run over by a man speeding in Gżira. She was hit on the first hour of her 30th birthday.

Prior to the vigil, KFC announced that it would be temporarily closing for the duration of the demonstration that started at 7pm.

This callous murder sent shockwaves throughout the nation, with several locals and members of the Turkish community in Malta lamenting her death.

Not too long after her death, Pelin’s friends and family also spoke to Lovin Malta to paint a picture of who she was, detailing her “beautiful” and “happy” personality.

Pelin moved to Malta due to her love for the island established while she was learning English.

She had aspirations to become a successful architect and was passionate about design, hence why she was working as an interior designer in Malta.

During last night’s vigil, one of her two sisters, Derya, gave a heartbreaking speech saying “We are here at the very spot where Pelin took her last breath. I wish it was me.”

She explained that this incident has left scars that will never be healed and iterated her family’s need for justice.

The alleged driver of this harrowing homicide is Jeremie Camilleri who is being charged with willful homicide along with a host of other charges – he is pleading not guilty.

Lovin Malta extends its deepest sympathy to Pelin’s loved ones
