WATCH: Labour MP Blasts Mosta Priest For ‘Sowing Dangerous Seed Of Hate Speech’
Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar has called out Mosta cleric Fr David Muscat for his anti-migrant rhetoric, warning he is sowing a dangerous seed of hate speech.
“While on the topic of hate speech, I can’t fail to mention this famous priest who is going on our state broadcaster and sowing this dangerous seed,” Cutajar said in a recent parliamentary debate on a proposed equality law. “It’s so dangerous in this day and age for a person like him to ride this wave that currently exists in Malta to stir up racial sentiments against people like us.”
“I appeal for more sensibility from everyone, irrespective whether you’re in politics or whether you’re a normal citizen with no political affiliation. Let’s me responsible. Saying you’re outspoken is no excuse to go on your computer and say whatever’s on your mind. Even I’m outspoken but I don’t write things like this.”
“Let’s not hide behind the famous ‘freedom of expression’ excuse either because it isn’t freedom of expression to say, as was the case with Raquel Richards, that someone deserves to be raped. Let’s not forget that hate speech is a crime, let’s be responsible for what we write on social media.”
Fr. Muscat, who has endorsed Imperium Europa leader Norman Lowell, has become a popular figure among anti-migrant people in recent months and last weekend addressed a protest in Valletta held in the wake of the Ħal Far open centre riots. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has urged Archbishop Charles Scicluna to take action against Fr. Muscat, stating that the Church shouldn’t allow a person from within to legitimise racial hatred.
