Supermarket Application On ODZ Land Along Birkirkara Bypass Resurfaces Again
A proposed application for a sizeable supermarket on ODZ land along the Birkirkara bypass has resurfaced once again.
The applicant and owner of the land, Jason Pace, had previously applied for a similar project back in 2015, with the application then being withdrawn.
The proposed application would take up over 5,000 sqm of agricultural land, also touching upon the narrow road of Sqaq it-Tiġieġ.
The public application form outlines the demolishing of existing structures and the proposed construction of basement parking and a supermarket.
It also proposes ancillary stores on the ground and first floor and the introduction of commercial premises which would also include offices.
Back in 2015, numerous entities had objected to the proposed commercialisation of ODZ land, with many warning that there were already enough commercial buildings in the area.
The land designated as ODZ is acting as a buffer zone between San Ġwann and Birkirkara, two localities that have already been subject to overdevelopment.
Applications for supermarkets and commercialised areas continue to pop up all over the Maltese islands, threatening land which is supposed to be protected from development of any kind.
Do you think Malta needs more supermarkets?
