The Great Wave Off Kanagawa Gets Malta Treatment, Recreated Using Recycled Waste

Article Featured Image

One of the most recognisable and reproduced artworks in the world has been recreated in Malta.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa was originally shown on a woodblock print back in 1831, with the print depicting three boats moving through a storm-tossed sea, with a large wave forming a spiral in the centre and Japan’s Mount Fuji visible in the background.

Now, one Maltese student, @gattofess recreated the iconic image in a collage made out of recycled material.

The image sees a classic Maltese luzzu replacing the traditional Japanese boat and the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral and the nearby Anglican Church in Valletta replacing Mt Fuji.

After weeks of “tsunamis“, this unique take on a classic art piece is a lighter take on the wild atmospheric phenomena the island has been experiencing.
