He is best-known as James Ryder, but the independent MEP candidate is actually called James Muscat.

And the comedian-turned-politician said last week that there are no fewer than four ‘Joseph Muscats’ in his family.

During an interview on Andrew Azzopardi on RTK103, the candidate confirmed that the name ‘Ryder’ actually started as a stage name for his magic act during his teenage years but stuck with him.

When he revealed his real surname, Azzopardi quipped that he shares a surname with former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

“Yes, like Joseph,” he said. “Joseph Muscat is my brother, my father, my grandfather, and my aunt – who was Josephine Muscat before her marriage. To tell you the truth, I don’t know why they called me James and not Joseph too but they wanted to be a bit more creative.”

Ryder is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming European Parliament election. Although he has pledged to base his campaign around humour, he has insisted it is a serious campaign and that he is targeting victory in June.
