We’ll Keep An Eye On Comino: Activists Demand Less Kiosks And End To Large Boats Or Will Take ’The Necessary Action Again’

Activists have urged Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo to drastically reduce the number of kiosks and large boats in Comino, pledging to keep an eye on the minister’s promises to address the takeover of the Blue Lagoon.

A failure to do so, Moviment Graffitti said, would lead to them taking “the necessary action again”.

Bartolo announced a number of changes related to sunbeds and umbrellas on Comino after protestors took matters into their own hands over the weekend.

However, he bizarrely claimed that authorities were planning to address the issues the very same day activists from Moviment Graffitti descended on the bay to reclaim it for the public.

The government is set to limit the number of sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach and the quay in Blue Lagoon – and Bartolo insisted authorities will work on better enforcement. Still, similar promises have been made before and Moviment Graffiti will keep a watchful eye on development while urging further action.

“We want to point out that our demands go beyond this because we have stressed that the commercial interests that have taken over this beach must be addressed.  The number and size of kiosks are drastically reduced and they are not allowed to play music. Large boats, such as the catamarans pouring hundreds of tourists at once, are no longer allowed to enter Comino,” it said.

“We have also stressed that there should be a holistic policy on Comino. Although this was promised years ago, in his statements, the Minister mentioned that the studies and the design of this policy have yet to begin. This is not acceptable!”

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop with the minister coy as to whether the government will pursue initiatives to limit the number of tourists on the island.
