A man has been fined for holding and keeping an unregistered exotic animal in an uninspected enclosure.

33-year-old Eric Attard from Żebbuġ must pay €2,000 after he pleaded guilty to keeping an unregistered panther. The panther was not inspected or approved by Maltese authorities – and Attard was found to have kept the panther while on a suspended conditional sentence.

Lovin Malta is informed that though the man hadn’t registered the panther, the panther remains with him as authorities do not have the space to confiscate it.

Told that he can pay his fine according to monthly payments of €166, he was warned by Magistrate Gabriella Vella that he would be jailed if he did not pay the fine.

This is not the first time exotic animals were found in village and town cores.

Another puma had been spotted prowling along the roof of a home in Fgura, and exotic animals are more common than you’d think on the island – check out a full list of Malta’s registered exotic animals, from lemurs to leopards, by following this link.
