Prime Minister Joseph Muscat proposed a national discussion on the regularisation of cannabis and prostitution last Friday, a view which was quickly supported by PN leader Simon Busuttil and Partit Demokratiku’s Marlene Farrugia.

As soon as the infamous subject was officially put on the table, however, thousands of people took to the internet to express their opinion on the matter, be it positive, negative or just downright hilarious.

Whether positive or negative, many reactions urged people to look at the bigger picture and the news’ context. And with a snap general election only a couple of weeks away, timing might turn out to be highly instrumental.

One thing’s for sure; it can’t be perfect timing for everyone.

As one reader pointed out, other countries around the world have already successfully legalised the use of marijuana for recreational purposes, and there should be no reason why it wouldn’t work in Malta. His comment went on to point out all the potential benefits a decision like this can have.
