The Lovin Malta Election Awards
With the election done and dusted it’s now time to recognise a few individuals or moments that stood out from the rest throughout the campaign. Here are Lovin Malta’s 2017 Election Awards.
1. Best PR Strategy
Tony Agius Decelis
De La Cheese. Do we really need to say any more?
2. Most Principled
Therese Comodini Cachia
Nothing says strong morals like sticking it to those who elected and running back to the higher-paying job in an entirely different country. It’s not like we needed as many women as possible in parliament.
3. Best Comeback
“Chicken” – Joseph Muscat
Who doesn’t like a casual throwback to the days you were picked on at school? Nothing gets the nostalgia going like senseless name-calling as you try to make a point.
4. Best Invented Word
“Labourproof” – Simon Busuttil
Why not invent a word that continues to reinforce ‘us vs them’ in an election that was already so divisive? You could have invented a word for the joy one feels when swimming for the first time after winter, or the joined sensation of sadness and hunger you get when you burn popcorn; but no – you went with labourproof.
5. Best Survey Result
Lovin Malta
Admittedly, we never said this was an accurate prediction of the result, but simply reported what our readers had voted. It was y’all that went on for weeks pretending we were claiming a Nationalist victory was imminent.
6. Best Presentation
Alleanza Bidla
We sure do love a good Powerpoint Presentation.
7. Best Debate Response
“Sellili għall-Papa” – Simon Busuttil
Yup, that’s gonna win over the undecided voters, snide jabs in response to one of the few non-biased questions at the university debate.
8. Best Interviewer
Ozzy Lino
Nothing made Dr Joseph Muscat look more relaxed that the bundle of nerves interviewing him at a local rally some weeks ago. Ozzy Lino’s Q&A verged onto the awkward spectrum far too often.
9. Best Endorsement By A Borderline War Criminal
Tony Blair
The Chilcot report stopped just short of calling him an outright criminal, but he’s not exactly an ideal person to have cheering you on.
10. Best Endorsement By Someone Who Has Lost All Touch With Reality
That one German MEP who went on about terrorism
No one remembers his name, or his role, we can’t either. But that just proves how relevant his endorsement really was.
11. Best Video Production
Marlene Farrugia’s live-streams
Because looking at the camera is so overrated. Thousands of people from all sides were engrossed with the almost daily updates live from different locations around Farrugia’s home, all while she seemed to make a conscious effort to never look in the correct place at any given moment.
12. Best member of the public
That one person who drew a giant penis across their vote
A true legend. No one’s vote had a louder or clearer message than theirs.
