Dos And Don’ts For This Week’s Epic Speed Dating Event At Bay Street

Meeting someone in Malta is usually confined to the drunken ramblings at the end of a Paceville night – not because you’re finally brave enough to speak to someone who’s caught your eye, but because you’re so wasted you have no idea the you’re even doing it.

Well, this week singletons in Malta have a unique opportunity to meet someone special without downing 23 shots beforehand. Bay Street are throwing an epic speed dating event on Saturday evening… the festivities commence at 19.00… and it’s free!

Word on the street is that you might even recognise a few faces, well known Maltese personalities have hinted that they might attend. Here’s some tips from us to you, to make sure you nail your first impression.

1. Do go with a friend

You know that Speed Dating in Malta is different from everywhere else, purely for the fact that there’s a high chance you’ll meet someone you already know there. Shatter that fearful thought by taking someone you know in the first place.

2. Don’t talk about mummy

We know it’s hard – seeing as most of us live with our parents till we actually do make a match with someone. But if your mum comes up in the first two minutes of your conversation – you probably should seek therapy.

3. Do ask questions

Maltese people love to talk about themselves. Use it to your advantage, but remember to jump in and show who you are as well.

4. Don’t interrogate

X’kilt illum? Missierek x’jismu? Kemm kellhekk tfajliet s’issa? – not the right way to go.

5. Do make eye contact

It shows confidence and is a refreshing change from the bloodshot, drunken eyes people are used to when flirting in Malta.

6. Don’t stare your partner down

It’s not sexy, it just reminds them of their neighbour Doris when she opens her front door every time you have a visitor to keep an inventory of your guests.

7. Do talk about your hobbies

And remember to embrace your quirky side. #HamrunPigeonClubForever

8. Don’t think it’s a monologue

Okay, we get it. You play for Birkirkara F.C. and you love your mum (see point one). How long does five minutes actually last?

9. Do dress the part

Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and sexy. Channel the I-Just-Threw-This-On look.

10. Don’t overdress

Fishnet tights, netted t-shirts, shoes you can’t actually walk in – probably not the best way to go.

11. Do give some background

There’s a substantial chance you could be related to anyone you meet at the event. Give a glimpse into your family, and then leave it at that. If you are cousins, it’s all good because you get a new anecdote and you’ll be able to move on in a couple of minutes.

12. Don’t take it too seriously

This kind of activity doesn’t happen in Malta too often – make the most out of it and have a laugh with your friends. Don’t go there necessarily expecting to meet your husband/wife…

13. Do show you’re interested

But if you do meet someone you like, don’t be coy about it. Chances are he/she lives two minutes away from you and you’ll be running into them in no time. Don’t spend a lifetime playing hide and seek and not knowing whether to say “hi orrajt” or not. Tell them outright you’d like to see them again. That kind of honesty doesn’t happen often on the Maltese dating scene. #IddurxMalLewża
