Stages Of Mourning The Azure Window
The collapse of the Azure Window in Dwejra is a loss for everyone. The people who grew up with it, the generations who’ll never see it, the tourists who can’t pretend to be holding it up in their holiday snaps. and the thousands of Maltese people who lost hours to Dwejra memes last Wednesday.
As we all struggle to come to terms with a vista that isn’t naturally framed, here’s a look at the stages of geological-grief which we all might be experiencing right now.
1. Denial
Still think this is FAKE NEWS. Somebody get someone to f*cking confirm the real story.
2. Anger
WHY DID THEY LET THIS HAPPEN? All those photos, all the divers, all those (couple of) film crews, all the towers in Sliema, the overdevelopment, the bad roads, climate change, Acapulco, traffic, Brexit, Labour, PN – they killed it!
3. Bargaining
Listen – if you bring it back we’ll never do another stupid Dwejra photo again, we swear!
… okay, maybe we limit to five a year. Just bring it back damn it!
4. Depression
Come out for a coffee? No ta, going to stay here and go through all my Gozo albums and make a collage of Dwejra pics. Oh shit, someone else shared that amazing Azure Window tribute video. I can’t.
5. Acceptance
Okay, it’s time to move on – we’ll get through this. We just need about a thousand more hilarious memes.
6. Depression again…
Nope, still hurts.
7. Actual Acceptance
What? There’s another Gozo window?
Get the camera.
8. Denial?
Maybe we don’t have to move on – maybe we could tell the whole world that we will keep the window alive by launching an international call for a memorial plan. #Rebuild
