Vogue Hails Malta As A ‘Mediterranean Heaven’

International glamour magazine Vogue yesterday published an article urging luxury holiday-makers to think twice about kicking their feet up on Italy’s well-trodden Amalfi Coast, and to instead, look a bit further south – Malta.

The famed publication highlighted Malta’s unique allure, ensuring satisfaction for each and every traveler archetype there is: from the foodie, to the history buff, architectural nut, beach bum, and partier.

From an architectural and historical point, Vogue cites Malta’s long and complex history of conquerors as aesthetic examples of the island being a clear cultural melting pot in the Mediterranean.

“Malta has been colonized again and again, by the Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, the French, and the British before it claimed its independence in 1964,” Vogue wrote. “It’s a fascinating history that’s visible around every corner.”

Vogue praised Malta for ticking every box required for a potential luxury getaway. Cuisine? Legligin and Rampila. Party scene? St Julian’s. Beaches? St Peter’s Pool and Għar Lapsi. Relaxed jazz, wine, and cocktail bars? Valletta’s Bridge Bar

But there were some negative points brought up, as well as one point of, well… confusion. According to the title of the piece, Malta is full of rustic beauty, hidden beaches and “no crowds”. Ironic given that the article was published mere hours before the most crowded day of the year in Malta.

The publication further accentuated the fallacy of free-space while paying homage to Malta’s beautiful, though truthfully, typically crowded, St Peter’s Pool.

Vogue wrote: “Eventually you’ll spot the stairs that lead you down to a Mediterranean playground. Although popular among locals and tourists, because of the remote location, it’s rarely too crowded and you can always find a spot on the dusty limestone. At St. Peters, you can swim among the locals in the crystal clear water and even cliff dive.”

While Vogue’s article was overwhelmingly flattering, and equally appreciated by us – we felt that the epidemic of Constant-Crowded-Bus-Feeling-Anywhere-Outside-Syndrome, or (CCBFAOS) that has been taking Malta by storm, should also be noted.
