18-Year-Old San Ġwann Student Given Three Year Probation Order After Secretly Filming Students In School Bathroom
An MCAST student has been handed a treatment order for three years and placed on probation after filming at least two students using the bathroom without their consent.
The student, from San Ġwann, admitted the charges, with Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo ordering a ban on the publication of the student’s name, as well as the names of his victims.
The case started after the student was caught filming another student over a school toilet cubicle on the MCAST Mosta campus in May. A male student using the bathroom realised he was being filmed, and stopped the accused from leaving the bathroom while he alerted police.
Police confiscated the student’s mobile phone, only to find footage of a second student using the bathroom.
He was subsequently charged with non-consensual filming of sexual footage, misusing electronic equipment and harassing his victims.
This is not the first case of someone being caught secretly filming someone else in a bathroom.
A restaurant owner’s phone was found to be holding footage filmed within the ladies’ bathroom in his restaurant as he was undergoing money laundering charges.
Another secretly-installed camera was found in the women’s staff room in Mater Dei Hospital.
On a related note, questions arose after the Attard Local Council installed CCTV in their public bathrooms – however, they said it was there to combat daily vandalism and substance abuse.
