22 Deaths Over 10 Months: A Timeline Of Malta’s Road Fatalities In 2022
Malta is on track for a record-breaking year when it comes to deaths on its roads, with the number of fatalities already more than the average number of deaths recorded over the past three years.
It’s reaching new highs as Malta continues to grapple with massive safety and traffic concerns as the number of deaths and injuries rack up.
Here is a timeline tribute to remember those who lost their lives on Malta’s roads this year:
2nd January: An 80-year-old woman hit by a car in Ħamrun
The 80-year-old Ħamrun resident was hit in Triq Giovanni Barbara, by a Peugeot 208 which was being driven by a 46-year-old man from Santa Venera.
The woman was hospitalised but unfortunately passed away later due to her injuries.
4th January: Puttinu Cares President and paediatric oncologist, Victor Calvagna, dies
Victor Calvagna, aged 63, was best known for his tireless work as the President of Puttinu Cares and as a paediatric oncologist.
Unfortunately, he passed away on 4th January after being hit by a car while jogging in Qawra in late December.
Calvagna will not be included in the NSO’s official figures for 2022 since the accident took place at the back end of 2021.
2nd February: Motorcyclist, Steven Sargent, dies a week before his 43rd birthday
Steven Sargent lost his life following a traffic accident involving a truck which was being driven by a 62-year-old man in Gudja. The father of one died just one week short of his 43rd birthday.
16th February: 28-year-old Nepali food courier, Ajay Shrestha, hit by a lorry-load of scrap metal on Aldo Moro Road, Marsa
The 28-year-old Nepali was working as a Bolt food courier when he collided with a truck carrying scrap metal on Aldo Moro Road in Marsa. Ajay was an avid cricket player and coach, who had come to Malta to find a better future for himself.
26th February: 50-year-old James Buttigieg hit by a car in Mrieħel
The Balzan resident and father of two was walking along Mdina Road in the morning when he was hit by a Toyota Vitz which was being driven by a 34-year-old woman.
5th March: 20-year-old Robert Azzopardi dies two days after losing control of his car
20-year-old Robert Azzopardi passed away two days after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree in Baħrija, in the limits of Rabat.
7th March: 38-year-old Bulgarian food courier, Yani Kuzmanov, dies following a crash
Kuzmanov died following a collision with a pickup truck in Triq il-President Anton Buttigieg in Zejtun.
He was rushed to Mater Dei for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
11th March: Horse sulky driver Joe Camilleri, aged 66, dies after being hit by a car in Rabat
Joe Camilleri was riding his sulky along the road in Rabat with another 64-year-old man when a Skoda Yeti being driven by a 49-year-old woman hit them.
Camilleri was given first aid, however, he was declared dead at Mater Dei later on.
15th March: Andrea Alamango, 28, dies in fatal Gzira accident
The 28-year-old passed away in hospital following a collision with another motorbike. Both drivers were flung off their motorcycles upon impact, however, the other driver only sustained light injuries
10th April: Eritrean man dies along Triq Diċembru-13, the first of many
A 31-year-old Eritrean national tragically lost his life after succumbing to injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
The young man, who lived in Ħal Far, was run over by a 32-year-old Żejtun resident along Triq Diċembru-13, Marsa, on 4th April at around 3.15am.
20th April: Sudanese man loses his life in Marsa
Just 10 days later, a 24-year-old Sudanese man died following a traffic accident along the same road in Marsa.
Police said in a statement that the man, who is a resident of Birzebbuġa, was run over by Land Rover.
5th May: Frenchman dies in Coast Road crash
A 35-year-old man died after having lost control of his motorcycle, colliding with a crash barrier on the Coast Road
The victim – a French national residing in Sliema – was caught between the barrier whilst his bike then spun out of control. It skidded along the road for several meters before eventually hitting trees on the opposite side.
24th May: Motorcyclist dies following Xewkija traffic accident
A 63-year-old motorcyclist died after a road traffic accident that took place in Xewkija a week prior. The incident took place at around 9.40am on 17th May, and involved a collision between the motorcycle and a car driven by a 66-year-old man, a resident of Sannat.
5th August: Antoine Degabriele killed in hit and run
Antoine Degabrielee, a 51-year-old resident of Żejtun was found dead after a hit-and-run along Triq Anton Buttigieg in Żejtun, at around 11:45pm.
The death of Degabriele came as a shock to his hometown community, with friends taking to social media to remember the best of the man.
Dean Donovan Frendo has been charged with killing Degabriele, driving over the speed limit, tampering with evidence and driving a vehicle without insurance or a license.
Donovan was located by police after CCTV footage of the incident helped identify his vehicle, a Mazda Demio, and after police were alerted by an anonymous tip.
21st August: Man dies after being run over in Marsa
A man, a 29-year-old Eritrean, died after being run over along Triq Diċembru-13 in Marsa. The driver of the vehicle was a 24-year-old man from Qormi.
24th August: Woman dies after being run over by bus
Kristina Zivanovic, aged 23, tragically lost her life after being run over by a bus in Birkirkara while she was on her way home from work, shocking many across the nation.
8th September: 87-year-old man dies after a motorcycle accident in Paola
An 87-year-old man died from injuries sustained after being run over by a motorcycle on 7th September.
Preliminary investigations showed that an 87-year-old Paola resident had been struck by a Honda motorcycle being driven by a 54-year-old Isla resident.
12th September: Man dies after being run over by a motorcycle in Gozo
A 62-year-old male resident of Fontana succumbed to his injuries after being run over in Rabat, Gozo.
The incident occurred on 6th September at around 9.30pm along Republic Street in Rabat.
The man was run over by a motorcycle driven by a 38-year-old man from Qala.
28th September: 21-year-old dies days after underage driver crashes into a wall
Ben Laferla, a 21-year-old man, died a few days after a car crash in Swieqi.
The accident happened at about 1.30am on 24th September along Triq il-Madliena in Swieqi.
Laferla was the passenger in the car. The crash happened after a 17-year-old underage female driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a wall.
The car was a GoTo vehicle, with many raising serious questions as to how an underage driver with no license was able to access the app and the vehicle.
14th October: 72-year-old woman dies after she is run over by motorbike in Birkirkara
A 72-year-old woman has died after she was run over by a motorcycle in Triq il-Wied, Birkirkara this afternoon.
The elderly Naxxar resident was run over by a Honda motorcycle which was being driven by a 22-year-old man from Mosta.
23rd October: 45-year-old woman dies in Rabat traffic accident
Marie Claire Lombardi died in a traffic accident on 23rd October in Triq l-Imdina, Rabat.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police noted that the 45-year-old Mġarr resident lost control of the Yamaha motorcycle she was driving and fell.
A medical team rushed her to Mater Dei Hospital, however, she was certified dead a short while after.
24th October: Jesus Reina dies after being run over along Malta’s deadliest road in 2022
Jesus Reina, a 24-year-old Venezuelan man, died after he was run over while crossing the road on Triq Diċembru-13, Marsa.
He is the fourth pedestrian to die along the road this year.
He was hit by a Mercedes Benz C250 that was being driven by a 66-year-old man from Fgura at around 2:10pm, after he had just gotten off the bus.
His girlfriend told Lovin Malta that she couldn’t locate him after the accident happened and that she had recognised his shoes from photos of the accident scene.
25th October: Man dies after being run over by van in Żejtun
Anthony Bongailas, a 69-year-old man, died after being run over in Żejtun.
A spokesperson for the police confirmed with Lovin Malta that the incident occurred at around 9.20am along Triq Id-Daħla ta’ San Tumas.
Bongailas was hit by an Isuzu Elf truck, which was being driven by a 62-year-old man. Both men are residents of Żejtun.
The victim was taken to Mater Dei hospital to receive treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
